Gilgit police unearth gang, recover stolen bikes, cell phones, laptops
Gilgit (TP) June 18: The Gilgit city police have unearthed an unusual and intricate gang of thieves and recovered stolen motorcycles, laptops, mobile phones and electronics and other items worth million of rupees.
Gilgit police told The Punch that two members of the gang have been taken into custody from the Konodas area while three of their accomplices were at large.
The police said that during a raid on a tunnel — the gangsters had set up in the mountain above the Konodas area to conceal the stolen items — they discovered five stolen motorcycles, 32 mobile phones, three laptops, one sophisticated camera, mobile SIMs, cash worth Rs15000, one pistol and several other items.
On a tip-off, the police busted the gang after discovering the tunnel which the gangsters would also use to sleep in the day time.
The police said that the gang members would descend the mountain in the darkness of the night and commit heist and robbery in different areas of the Gilgit city before returning to the elaborate secretive tunnel.
The police said that the tunnel’s walls were rock-hard but no lighting had been set up by the thieves.
According to the police, the thieves would strike at different shops and properties at night to commit the crime while stayed back in the tunnel in day time.
Police said that they will return the stolen items to the rightful owners once the investigation was complete.
Meanwhile, SSP Gilgit Raja Mirza Hassan has announced cash prize and commendation certificates for the police team led by SHO Thezeebul Hassan.
