Gilgit (TP) January 15, 2020: A young girl and a child were killed and two others injured after a snow avalanche struck a house in the remote Thali area of Kamri in district Astor in Gilgit-Baltistan.
Locals said that the avalanche hit the house between the night of Sunday and Monday, while the family was sleeping. As a result of the avalanche strike, 19-year-old Zainab and four-year-old Rehmat Ullah were killed on the spot and Muhammad Sultan and Amir Hayat were injured.
According to locals, the injured could not be taken to the hospital as the only linking road has been cut off after being hit by the heavy snowfall in the last 24 hours.
According to locals, the heavy snowfall has also left around 60 livestock including goats, cow and sheep dead as avalanches hit several residential areas and cattle dens in the district.
Meanwhile, locals have appealed to the Force Commander FCNA and the chief minister Gilgit-Baltistan to arrange a helicopter to airlift the injured to Gilgit for treatment as the heavy snowfall has forced the closure of several link roads and the main road in Astor district.
During the last 24 hours, around 70 persons were killed after a snow avalanche hit residential areas in Neelum Valley in Azad Jammu and Kashmir. More than 10 people were killed in Punjab and Balochistan in rain-related incidents during the last 24 hours.
