Rao Anwar gets bail in Naqeebullah murder case
Karachi (TP): An anti-terrorism court in Karachi on Tuesday granted bail to former SSP Rao Anwar in the murder case of Naqeebullah Mehsood.
The court granted the bail on a plea against the surety sum of Rs1 million
The bail drew strong criticism from social media users who took the court to task for granting bail to a man whose hands were socked with the blood of over 150 innocent people who were killed by him and his team during alleged encounters.
Rao left the ATC premises amid tight security after the bail was granted on a verdict reserved on the bail plea.
On January 13 this, Rao carried out a police encounter in Karachi and claimed to have killed four terrorists including Mehsood.
Later, it transpired that the encounter was staged and those killed in the fake encounter were innocent citizens who had been picked up from Karachi.
Mehsood’s family and civil society members had filed a petition to arrest Rao who had gone into hiding soon after the alleged encounter, however, he surrendered to the Supreme Court in a dramatic style. The top court handed him over to the Karachi police and a joint investigation team grilled Rao for over a month, however, the investigation report has not been made public.
